Our Pastor

Rev. Karen Nelson - Minister

What a blessing it was for me to be asked to serve as the pastor of Lisbon United Methodist Church.  It felt like I was coming home, home to a part of the state that we called home for nineteen years, home to a community that we have known and loved during that time, home to a local church that loves and serves the Lord with passion.

I began serving local churches in 1996 when I was appointed as the Pastor of Youth and Education at First United Methodist Church in Marion.  While I served there I attended seminary at University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.  I graduated from UDTS in 2001 and was appointed to serve at New Horizons UMC in Coralville where I served until 2011.  During that time I received my Doctorate of Ministry from UDTS.  I served as a Field Outreach Minister for the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church in the Central District from 2011-2016.  In that position I worked with 80 some United Methodist churches in the Des Moines area.

I have been married to Gary for 38 years, we have 3 grown children and 8 beautiful grandchildren that we like to see every chance we get.  Gary retired from his position as elementary principal at Mt. Vernon Community schools six years ago. He enjoys golfing, lawn work and helping at Scratch Cupcakery, the business our daughter, Deanna manages.  He is also actively involved in the church.

My passion in the church and it is my desire that all people come to know how much they are loved by God.

Join us for worship on Sunday at 9:45am.  I believe you will find this congregation to be as warm and welcoming to you as they have been to us!   I am usually in the office Monday-Thursday mornings from 9am-noon and other times by appointment. I can be reached at the church office at 319-455-2000 or via email at Lisbonumcpk@gmail.com

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go the house of the Lord.”
